Well and truly “OVER IT”.
Every bloody winter we hear the same tale; one grounded in ignorance, incited by arrogance and of stupid ego in control. VMC single engine v winds, cloud, ice and vertical dirt. WHY? Decades ago, just before my PPL test flight, my instructor called me into the briefing room, dropped a 'file' on the desk and told me to read it; so, I did. It was 'accident' reports from BASI and their 'I learned about flying from that' series of accident analysis. About an hour later, on a blackboard, I was given a briefing; essentially, it was about planning a flight; high ground, freezing levels, cloud, wind and 'route selection'. It was priceless, life saving advice and it was the starting point of my 'mental' weather/ route planning library. The latest 'event' pilot - (it was no accident M'lud}- had several other, safer options.
“But the point of a ‘human error’ investigation is to understand why people’s assessments and actions made sense at the time, given their context, and without knowledge of outcome, not to point out what they should have done instead.”
One of the questions ATSB absolutely must answer is why was the most potentially lethal route chosen? Almost Kamikaze. There were safer options with little in the way of 'penalty' in time or fuel; no where near as expensive as SAR, ATSB and others out looking (risking their necks) or a funeral. Rules and 'what happened' investigations have not deterred these regular events. Perhaps the 'trick-cyclists' should be roped in. But better yet would be more education – maybe make a CPL Met exam mandatory;or, make examiners 'test' the logic in the flight plan related to a bad weather forecast. Hell's Bells, I don't know the answer; but it is time this problematic repeat scenario was ended, with malice aforethought if required.

And trouble not Hathi the Silent, and mock not the Boar in his lair.”
Then, there's Hitch to consider –Australian Flying. -If he continues his flow of nicely balanced, sensible, readable articles, he'll have to go onto the TIM TAM list. Three full paragraphs, each presenting a realistic point of view on the three vexed subjects in the latest LMH – HERE – are worthy of consideration. Para.3 relates to the CASA and is a must read for those in the industry who do battle with the 'authority'. It won't happen with this government; it just will not; it suits 'em far too well. But from an industry stand point; there must, absolutely must be reform of the whole sad, sorry, confused, confounded train wreck. In the current 'configuration' under the current 'leadership' it is significantly detrimental, under a heavy top cover of bull-shit and ministerial absence, interest or care for the public or the tax which supports the whole reeking pile of nothing done. ICAO awaits the call. "Why didn't ya call?"
“It is an error to argue in front of your data. You find yourself insensibly twisting them round to fit your theories.
Wouldn't mind a dollar for every time I've been asked 'what happened' to the Indian 787; “No idea” says I – 'click'. I know folk like to speculate and the event was intriguing; worth a quiet discussion over an Ale with fellow professionals; but outside of that, without tangible 'evidence' and a complete investigation – published, there are no real answers. Not yet a while anyway. Best let the expert men and women do their work; gods know there's plenty of it to do. AP wishes them good hunting..
“How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?”
Aye well: that's enough rambling for this week. BRB tonight, darts match against our old adversary; the Brit's. Tough game; d'you know, they once brought in an FO who was born and bred in the Circus industry; his best mate a Romany (gypsy) who taught him darts using six inch nails – deadly accurate and marvelous to watch. Well, he's a Skipper now and he still plays with his faithful nails. Can't wait; the stove is lit so the dogs etc, should stay warm until I get home. Time to find my boots, pick up P7 and depart the fix.
Selah.-.
