Dear P2,

This week, state and federal governments that have presided over the failure of child protection systems right across Australia lined up to lecture the Northern Territory about protecting vulnerable Aboriginal children.

They signed a joint statement demanding the Northern Territory keep the very framework that has failed to protect our children.

Not one of them could explain why, after decades of the same policies, slogans and principles, Aboriginal children remain catastrophically overrepresented in abuse, neglect and out-of-home care.

I want to tell you what that failure actually looks like, because these numbers are almost too painful to write.

In the last full reporting year, the Northern Territory received 39 notifications alleging sexual harm involving babies under twelve months of age.
Another 177 involved children aged one, two and three.

Behind every one of those figures is a child who could not speak for themselves.

For too long, governments and institutions have been more worried about offending activists, organisations, and bureaucracies than confronting the reality facing vulnerable children.

They have protected systems from criticism while children have continued to suffer. They have defended ideology while families have buried children.
The Northern Territory’s Every Child Matters Bill should not be controversial. A child’s safety must come first.

It does not erase family, kinship, community or culture. It simply makes clear that these considerations can never be used to justify leaving a child in danger, returning a child to danger, or delaying help while adults argue over process.

Safety and cultural connection are not mutually exclusive. Every child deserves both. But culture must never become an excuse for inaction.

We have endured inquiry after inquiry, review after review, promise after promise. And still too many of our children are unsafe.

So I will keep asking the question these governments refuse to answer: if the current approach is working, why are so many Aboriginal children still unsafe?

I will keep fighting to put the safety of every child ahead of ideology, bureaucracy and failed systems.
